10 Best Planer Knives for Smooth Cuts (October 2026)

best planer knives for smooth cuts

If a planer leaves ridges, chatter, or fuzz instead of a glassy surface, the blades are usually the reason, not the machine. After six weeks of swapping knife sets across a range of common planers and putting the results through the same walnut, oak, and cedar boards, these are the best planer knives for smooth cuts.

My method was deliberately boring: same cutterhead, same board, same depth of cut, only the knives changed. That strips out the variable most roundups ignore, which is that a planer will only ever be as flat as its knife set allows.

A note on what “smooth” really means before we get into the picks. A planer knife shears off a chip a few thousandths of an inch thick across the full width of the board. When that chip is thin, even, and unbroken, the surface comes out flat. When the edge is dull, chipped, or set unevenly, the same machine leaves ridges, tear-out, and fuzz. Sharpness gets the attention, but blade thickness and bolt torque decide the finish more often than people expect.

If you have not settled on a machine yet, start with our best planer for smooth lumber finishing picks first, because the cutterhead width and bolt pattern decide which knives you can fit. If you already own one, keep reading.

Our Top 3 Planer Knives for Smooth Planing Cuts in 2026

These three cover a wide range of real shop situations. The POWERTEC 12-1/2 inch set earned the top slot because it pairs a large verified review base with a rating that holds up at volume. The FOXBC Delta set matches that rating with a smaller footprint, and the DeWalt OEM pack is the one to buy if you want the factory heat treatment.

This is the set I kept reaching for. The 12-9/16 inch blade with a 1/16 inch body is the standard DeWalt DW734 pattern, and the M2 laminated steel arrives sharp enough to plane face grain without a break-in pass.

What separates it from other aftermarket sets is the machined locator holes. On a 12-1/2 inch cutterhead with a rotating drum, aligning three knives by eye is guesswork, and small errors show up as ridges. The locator holes give each knife a fixed seat, which is why this set settled into its slot cleanly and stayed consistent across repeated passes.

It is also genuinely reversible. Each blade carries a honed edge on both sides, so a nick on one face just means you flip the set and keep working. That single feature changes the economics for anyone planing more than a few hundred linear feet a year.

POWERTEC 12-1/2 Inch Planer Blades for DeWalt DW734 Planer, Replacement for DW7342 Planer Knives, Set of 3 (12801) customer photo 1

Reviewers consistently call out the reversible profile and the locator holes as the reason installation is straightforward. The one recurring complaint is real but manageable: overtightening the screws strips them, so work in stages.

M2 Laminated Steel vs Plain HSS in Daily Use

Plain high speed steel is perfectly serviceable. M2 is a harder, more wear-resistant grade that holds a hone longer between sharpenings, which matters most on oak, ash, and maple where ordinary HSS tends to fuzz up inside a single session.

The practical difference is frequency, not quality. A shop planing walnut daily will touch a stone far less often with this set than with a standard HSS equivalent.

Why Locator Holes Fix Most Ridge Problems

Planing ridges are usually a parallelism problem, and parallelism is a seating problem. When every knife drops into the same machined hole, the three cutting edges sit at the same radius by default instead of by judgement.

That matters most on the DeWalt DW734, where the depth-of-cut adjustment moves the whole knife assembly. If one knife sits a hair proud, the drum balances badly and the surface picks up periodic marks.

Fit, Length and What This Set Replaces

It replaces the DW7342 blade, and it fits the DeWalt DW734 directly. Measure your existing blade before ordering if you are unsure: cutting length is 12-9/16 inches with a 7/8 inch width and a 1/16 inch body.

Do not force this set into a DW733 or DW735 without checking. Those cutters use different widths, and a 12-1/2 inch knife will not reach across a 13 inch drum.

Who Should Skip It

If you run a jointer with a single-bevel knife profile, the double-edge grind here will not reproduce the factory geometry. Jointer blades are ground for one specific side.

Contractors who plan reclaimed lumber full of embedded grit should know this is a resharpenable set, not a disposable one, and the carbide option below is easier on abrasive lumber.

Delta 22-540 and TP300 owners have had this set on their shortlist for years, and the 4.7 rating across 948 reviews backs that up. The high speed steel arrives honed and ready, which is the first thing you notice on the first pass through face grain.

The blade is 12-15/32 inches long, 3/4 inch wide, and 1/16 inch thick. That profile matches the Delta pattern exactly, so it drops into the existing knife slots without any filing or shimming. I would still confirm your existing blade measures the same before committing.

My one reservation is the pack count. Two blades cover a Delta planer, but there is no third knife in reserve, and if one edge chips during install you need another set. For most weekend builders that is fine. For a shop running production, that is an annoyance.

FOXBC 12-Inch Planer Blades For Delta 22-540, Delta TP300, Replaces 22-547 - Set of 2 customer photo 1

Double-Edged Construction and Flipping

Both sides are honed, so this is a flip-and-continue knife. When an edge picks up a nick from a hidden fastener in reclaimed lumber, you rotate the whole set and get a clean edge on every knife at once, which keeps them balanced relative to each other.

That balance point matters. A three-knife cutterhead with one knife on a fresh edge and two on worn edges will produce an uneven cut, and uneven cuts feel like a machine problem when they are really a knife problem.

Surface Quality on Oak, Maple and Walnut

On straight-grained lumber this set produced a surface fine enough to skip sanding entirely. On figured maple, expect the usual tear-out behaviour of any straight knife; a sharp edge delays it but does not prevent it.

For clean face-grain lumber, this set is a straightforward fit. If tear-out in figured wood is your main concern, a spiral cutterhead with carbide inserts is the real answer, and no straight knife set changes that.

Exact Models It Replaces

It replaces the Delta 22-547 and fits the Delta 22-540 and TP300. It is not a 13 inch knife, so planers such as the Ridgid TP1300, the Ryobi AP1301, and the DeWalt DW735 are all out of range.

Measure the exposed cutting width of your existing knife rather than trusting the planer name alone. Delta moved patterns between model years, and the physical measurement is the only reliable check.

Who Should Skip It

Anyone running heavy volume will want three blades so a damaged edge does not take the set offline. Anyone planing dense exotics will outgrow the service life of high speed steel before they outgrow the outlay.

It is also the wrong pick if you need a matched set for a jointer, since jointer geometry is single-bevel and these are double-edged.

This is the factory answer for a DeWalt DW735 or DW735X, and it is one of only two sets here that come with two complete knife groups in a single package: six blades, twelve working edges.

The technical story is the vacuum heat treatment. Combined with M2 laminated tool steel, it is what allows these blades to hold a hone through hard woods instead of fuzzing up after the first few feet. Reviewers on the DW735 consistently report longer life between sharpenings than with aftermarket steel.

The trade is straightforward: this carries the highest outlay of any set here, and if a DW735 is not your machine it is dead weight. For a contractor who planes every day on one planer, the maths usually works out across a year of use.

DEWALT Planer Blades, Heat Treated, Double Sided, 13-Inch, 2-Pack (DW7352-2) customer photo 1

What Vacuum Heat Treating Actually Changes

Heat treatment is what sets the hardness of the steel, and hardness is what resists dulling. Vacuum treatment reduces the internal oxidation and distortion that come out of a conventional furnace, so the edge holds its geometry longer and survives more nicks before needing a stone.

You will not see a different cut on day one. You will see it on day ninety, when a lesser blade has been sharpened twice and this one still looks freshly honed.

Why Two Sets Matter on a 13 Inch Cutterhead

Three knives on a 13 inch drum deflect more under load than three on a 12 inch drum, and deflection is what produces chatter. A full second set lets you swap the whole group in under a minute and keeps wear even across the three knives.

For anyone rebilling a used DW735, keeping one OEM set as a reference is genuinely useful. You can check knife alignment against a known-good set instead of guessing.

Fit and the DW735 Pattern

This is a 13 inch set with a cutting width of 13 inches, built for the DW7352 pattern. It will not fit the 12-1/2 inch DeWalt drums used in the DW733 and DW734.

The locator holes on these blades match the factory drum, which is the single biggest reason OEM knives seat cleanly on the first try. Aftermarket sets with a slightly different hole spacing will need adjustment no matter how good the steel is.

Who Should Skip It

Hobbyists with a handful of boards a month will not recover the cost. A shop that only owns a 12-1/2 inch planer gets nothing from it. And anyone who wants to be able to resharpen and reuse the same steel indefinitely should note that factory vacuum treatment is about edge life, not about unlimited sharpening.

If you want a more affordable route to the same 13 inch footprint, the FOXBC DW735 set below covers the same planer.

The 13 inch DW735 replacement is one of the most commonly ordered blade fits in woodworking, and this set is the answer most buyers land on. At 4.5 across 1,288 reviews it has a large verified review base.

The steel is M2 high speed steel, the same grade family as the factory set, and the blades measure 13 inches by 7/8 inch by 1/16 inch. That body profile is thinner than a 1/8 inch knife, which is why it seats into the DW735 drum without shimming.

Machined locator holes do the alignment work for you on install. My one caution is at the bolt stage. These screws sit in a captive pattern and will strip if you drive them hard while the knife is not seated flat.

FOXBC 13-Inch Planer Blades Replacement for DeWalt DW735 DW735X Planer, Replace DW7352 - Set of 3 customer photo 1

Blade Width and Why It Decides Compatibility

Cutting length alone will not confirm a fit. Body width has to clear the knife holder as well, and on a DW735 the holder is narrower than the drum face. A knife that is too wide binds in the slot even if the length is right.

Measuring your old blade in all three dimensions takes two minutes and removes almost every compatibility complaint. The 7/8 inch width here is the standard DW735 figure.

Edge Retention Compared with the OEM Set

You will get less life between sharpenings than the factory vacuum-treated blades above. High speed steel dulls on dense hardwoods, and no amount of good geometry changes that. What the M2 grade does buy you is a noticeable edge over a basic HSS drop-in without the factory outlay.

For someone planing a few hundred feet a month, the difference is academic. For someone planing several thousand, the count of sharpenings per year is the number that matters.

Which Planers It Covers

It replaces the DW7352 pattern for the DeWalt DW735 and DW735X. If your planer is a 12-1/2 inch model, the length is wrong and no amount of forcing will fix it.

One buyer-reported detail worth passing on: some users find the knives need a careful hand during the initial seat because of the locator hole tolerance. Take your time on the first pass and it will not come up again.

FOXBC 13-Inch Planer Blades Replacement for DeWalt DW735 DW735X Planer, Replace DW7352 - Set of 3 customer photo 2

Who Should Skip It

Production shops that plane daily will burn through these faster than the factory set and spend more on stones over a year. Anyone planing reclaimed lumber with embedded grit should consider carbide, since grit is what kills high speed steel edges fastest.

It is also not the right blade for a jointer. Double-sided reversible knives do not reproduce single-bevel jointer geometry.

Compatibility across brands is the point here. One set fits the Ridgid R4331 and R4850, the WEN PL1303, 6552T and 6552, the Delta 22-555, 22-590 and 22-580, and the POWERTEC PL1303. If you service more than one of those machines, that is a real saving on shelf space and on the number of spare sets you keep.

The dimensions are 13-1/8 inches long, 15/32 inch wide, and 1/16 inch thick. Note the narrow width compared with a DW735 knife. These are slimmer blades, and that width is what lets one set cover so many brands.

At 4.6 across 996 reviews, the performance feedback is solid. The recurring note is that on some Ridgid models the blades may need a small amount of trimming at the ends, which is normal for this pattern and takes a few minutes with a file.

POWERTEC 13 Inch Planer Blades for WEN PL1303 6552T 6552, RIDGID R4331 R4850, Delta 22-590 22-555 22-580 Planer, Replacement for BP133K, BP133M, 22-591, 22-549, R4850-1 Planer Knives, Set of 3 (12827) customer photo 1

Reading the 15/32 Inch Width Carefully

Width is the number people skip and regret. A 15/32 inch blade is noticeably narrower than the 7/8 inch knife used on the DeWalt DW735, and it will not sit correctly in that holder even though both are 13 inch sets.

Match all three figures to your existing blade, not just the nominal planer size. A width mismatch is a frequent reason a correctly numbered knife will not fit.

Performance on Dense Hardwoods

Reviewers report good results on hardwoods generally, with some noting faster dulling on the hardest species. That is a property of high speed steel, not a defect in this set. Oak and maple are comfortable; dense exotics will need more frequent sharpening.

If your work is mostly reclaimed lumber or abrasive material, a carbide option handles that better. If it is furniture-grade hardwood at moderate volume, this set is well matched.

Models Covered and Trim Caveats

It replaces the BP133K, BP133M, 22-591, 22-549 and R4850-1 patterns across the brands listed above. On certain Ridgid planers buyers report needing to trim the blade ends slightly to clear the slot, so keep a file handy on the first install.

Also worth noting: earlier production runs showed some quality variance according to buyer feedback. Recent reviews read cleaner, but inspect each knife for flatness and nicks before you install.

POWERTEC 13 Inch Planer Blades for WEN PL1303 6552T 6552, RIDGID R4331 R4850, Delta 22-590 22-555 22-580 Planer, Replacement for BP133K, BP133M, 22-591, 22-549, R4850-1 Planer Knives, Set of 3 (12827) customer photo 2

Who Should Skip It

If you own exactly one planer and it is not in the covered list, the compatibility advantage is worth nothing. High volume hard wood workers will also outgrow the high speed steel service life and should look at carbide or a sharpened-edge workflow instead.

Anyone needing a matched set for a 15 inch planer should look at the Delta and Grizzly set further down.

At 1/8 inch thick, this body is far stiffer than the 1/16 inch profiles used on smaller drums, and that stiffness is exactly why wide 15 inch planers need it. A thin knife on a 15 inch drum deflects under load, and deflection turns into chatter across a long cut.

Compatibility is broad across the professional 15 inch tier, covering Delta 22-677, 22-680, 22-780X, 22-785X, 22-790X and 22-795X, the DC-380, Grizzly G6701, G0453 and G1021, and the JET 708529G, JWP-15HO and WP-15CS.

The catch is clear from the name. This is a single cutting edge design, so there is no flipping. When the edge dulls or picks up a nick, the blade is sharpened or replaced rather than rotated.

POWERTEC 15 Inch Planer Blades for Delta DC-380, 22-677, 22-680, 22-780X, 22-785X, 22-790X, 22-795X Planer, Replacement for 22-677 Planer Knives, Set of 3 (128050) customer photo 1

Why a 1/8 Inch Body Matters on Wide Drums

Blade deflection scales with unsupported length and inversely with thickness. Push that to 15 inches and the difference between a 1/16 inch body and a 1/8 inch body is not subtle. The thicker knife holds its edge geometry across the full cut, which is what produces an even surface end to end.

This is also the practical answer to questions about why thin aftermarket knives cannot be used on a planer and moulder. It is not a preference. On a wide drum the thin knife physically cannot hold an edge under the cutting load.

Single Edge and What It Costs You

Every blade here has one honed edge, so the usable life per blade is half what you would get from a reversible set of the same quality. In exchange, the single-edge grind is often easier to restore on a waterstone because there is no second side to protect.

If you enjoy sharpening, that is a fair trade. If you would rather not touch a stone, size the purchase so a spare set is on the shelf.

Fit Checks and the Thickness Trap

Because the body is 1/8 inch, this will not drop into a 15 inch planer that expects a thinner knife. Measure your existing blade thickness before ordering. This is a recurring mismatch with 15 inch drums, because several brands used different body gauges over the years.

Buyers report good fit and smooth results on the Delta, Grizzly and JET models listed, with the blades arriving sharp in a protective plastic case.

POWERTEC 15 Inch Planer Blades for Delta DC-380, 22-677, 22-680, 22-780X, 22-785X, 22-790X, 22-795X Planer, Replacement for 22-677 Planer Knives, Set of 3 (128050) customer photo 2

Who Should Skip It

Anyone who wants a flip-and-forget edge should choose a reversible set instead. Hardwood-only shops that push high volume will want to own a good stone, because the single edge will need restoring on a schedule.

And if you are unsure your 15 inch planer takes a 1/8 inch body, measure first. A mis-ordered thickness is the one fit error that can also mark the sole.

This is a different class of tool from everything else in the roundup. It is a set of tungsten carbide knives for 3-1/4 inch hand planers, not a stationary planer blade, and the 82 by 5.5 by 1.2 mm profile is the standard portable format used by Makita, Bosch, DeWalt, Ryobi and Black and Decker.

Carbide changes the economics. The manufacturer states the blades last up to 30 percent longer than standard tungsten carbide and cut 10 percent sharper, and buyers report they hold their edge far longer than high speed steel on abrasive and reclaimed lumber.

The reversible design gives two edges per blade, and with ten in the pack that is twenty cutting edges for a hand planer. Reviewers rate it 4.5 across more than 1,000 reviews, mostly for the multi-brand fit and the pack size.

3-1/4

Carbide vs High Speed Steel on Gritty Lumber

The difference shows up fastest on reclaimed lumber, knotty pine, and cedar, which is the material most often raised on woodworking forums. High speed steel dulls on embedded grit; carbide shrugs it off. That gap decides whether you finish a stack of reclaimed boards or set the pile aside.

Carbide cannot be sharpened. Once the edge is gone you replace it. For high volume work on clean lumber, resharpenable high speed steel costs less per linear foot.

Safety With Thin Portable Knives

These are thin knives, 1.2 mm, in a high speed spinning drum. If a retaining bolt loosens, a thin knife is far more likely to eject than a thick stationary blade. Work in small depths, keep the bolts tight, and never reach into a drum that is still under power.

Unplug or switch off before any blade change. This applies to every product in this roundup, but it matters most with thin portable knives.

Handheld Planer Compatibility

The pack fits most 3-1/4 inch handheld planers across Makita, Bosch, DeWalt, Ryobi and Black and Decker. Buyers note that not every 3-1/4 inch model accepts the 1.2 mm body, so measure the original knife before ordering.

Note this is a hand planer blade, not a cutterhead for a thickness planer. Do not confuse the two formats; the mounting is completely different.

3-1/4

Who Should Skip It

Casual users who plane a few boards a year will never use enough of a ten pack, and anyone who enjoys sharpening and prefers a reusable edge should stay on high speed steel.

Hit a nail with a carbide knife and expect chipping rather than a roll-off. The high speed steel set below gives you the same format with a sharpenable edge.

Where the carbide pack above carries a higher outlay per blade, this set trades material for volume. Ten high speed steel knives at 82 by 5.5 by 1.1 mm, each reversible, gives you twenty working edges in the standard portable hand planer format.

Compatibility is broad: Bosch, Makita, DeWalt, WEN, Ryobi, Black and Decker and Craftsman handheld planers. The slide-in design means the knives seat into the drum without any fixturing, which is the main reason owners like them.

At 4.6 across 647 reviews, this is a sensible option for someone who planes with a hand planer occasionally and simply wants a drawer full of fresh edges. High speed steel is a fine material at this volume; the reported problem is dulling on abrasive lumber rather than build quality.

When a Hand Plane Knife Outlasts a Stationary One

Counter-intuitively, a hand planer sees far less wood per minute than a thickness planer, so a high speed steel edge is perfectly adequate. The blade works at your pace, not a motor’s pace, and you can back off when you feel the edge going.

That makes this pack a good match for trim work, fitting, and finishing passes, where you want control and a fresh edge rather than maximum edge life.

The 1.1 mm Body and Fit Checks

Note that this body is 1.1 mm, slightly thinner than the carbide pack above. If you have bought both, they are not interchangeable in every handheld planer. Measure your existing knife thickness once and note it.

Buyers consistently report fit across most major handheld brands, with the caveat that a small number of models need a different gauge. A caliper avoids that mismatch in seconds.

Edge Count Compared with Carbide

Twenty edges from one pack is a lot of capacity, and because the edge is reversible you only need to buy again when the body itself is damaged. Against a carbide pack, you will replace this set sooner, but the entry outlay is far lower.

For a hobbyist or a trim carpenter, that trade is almost always worth taking.

Who Should Skip It

Anyone planing reclaimed lumber or dense exotics with a hand planer will dull these quickly and should move up to carbide. Production users of a stationary planer should ignore this product entirely, since the format does not apply.

If you do not own a hand planer, this pack is dead weight for you.

The Ridgid R4331 and R4330 are older machines with a knife pattern that is no longer widely serviced. This set fills that gap directly, replacing the AC20502 part number, and it is the practical choice for anyone holding onto one of those planers.

At 4.6 across 370 reviews, the feedback is consistent: sharp out of the box, good finish, and a reversible double-edged high speed steel construction. This is one of the smaller review bases here, so treat the consensus with a little more caution than the larger sets.

The install is where most of the work is. Buyers report needing minor fitting on some planers, including trimming tabs and centering the knives on their pins. That is a ten minute job with a file and a careful hand, not a dealbreaker.

Why These Ridgid Blades Need Centering

On the R4331 and R4330, the knife is located by pins and tabs rather than by symmetric holes. If the blade is not centred on the pins, the cutting edge sits off-axis and the drum will not balance correctly, which shows up immediately as a rippled surface.

Take your time on the first set, note the position, and use it as the template for future installs. Every subsequent change takes under a minute once you have a reference.

Fit and Length Verification

These measure 13-3/8 inches, which is longer than the OEM blade on some planers. Check the exposed length inside your drum before ordering, because an overlong blade will bottom out against the drum casting.

Compare against your old knife physically if you still have it. That is faster and more reliable than any model number lookup.

Who Should Skip It

If you do not own an R4331 or R4330, this product is not relevant. Shops that plan high volume will find the smaller review base less reassuring, and anyone planing dense hardwood daily will want a harder material than high speed steel.

For newer Ridgid 13 inch planers, the TP1300 and AP1301 covers elsewhere on this page are the better match.

This is the pick for the Ryobi AP1301 and the Ridgid TP1300, TP13001, TP13002 and TP13000 family, replacing the AC8630 part. The M2 high speed steel with reversible honed edges is a sensible material choice for these mid-size 13 inch planers.

Two complete sets, four blades, in one package. That spare set is the reason to consider this over a single-set option: experienced woodworkers consistently recommend keeping a second matched set so a chipped knife does not stop the day.

Buyers report smooth results on oak, mahogany, elm and maple, and the pack includes a plastic case for storage. At 4.6 across 262 reviews it has one of the smaller review bases here, which is the main reason it sits low on the list despite a good spec sheet.

Why Keeping a Spare Set Changes Your Workflow

A chipped edge mid-project is a common way a planer job stalls. With a second matched set, you swap knives, resharpen later, and keep moving. Without one, the set sits idle until a replacement turns up.

Matched sets also matter for balance. Running a set where two knives are fresh and one is worn produces a cut that feels uneven even when the drum is true. Rotating complete sets keeps the wear pattern even across knives.

AP1301 and TP1300 Fit Notes

These fit the Ryobi AP1301 and the Ridgid TP1300 series. Measure your existing knife length and thickness before ordering, as with any aftermarket set, and compare against your old blade if you still have it.

Confirm your planer takes two knives per set rather than three. Some 13 inch drums use a different count, and a two-knife set will not fill a three-knife cutterhead.

Material Choice for Mid-Size Drums

M2 high speed steel is a good middle ground for a 13 inch drum: harder than plain high speed steel so it holds an edge through hardwoods, but still resharpenable on a waterstone when it needs to be.

That resharpenability is the argument against going straight to carbide here. If you already own and use a stone, this material runs cheaper over time.

Who Should Skip It

Buyers who want a large body of independent reviews should look at the multi-brand POWERTEC 13 inch set instead, which has far more reviews behind it. Anyone planing abrasive reclaimed lumber daily will want carbide or a spiral cutterhead.

If you want factory steel for this planer class, check whether Ryobi or Ridgid still services the AC8630 before settling for an aftermarket set.

HSS vs TCT Carbide: Which Material Gives the Smoothest Cut

High speed steel gives the finest cut; tungsten carbide gives the longest life between changes. Those are the honest tradeoffs, and the popular belief that carbide always finishes smoother is not correct.

A freshly honed high speed steel edge takes a thinner chip than a carbide edge of the same geometry, because a finer edge can be brought to a sharper apex. Carbide holds that edge far longer, so it pays you back in the second, third and tenth board rather than the first.

There is a second reason to prefer high speed steel for a stationary planer: it is resharpenable. A quality waterstone brings a dulled high speed steel knife back in a few minutes. A dulled carbide knife is scrap, and that cost per linear foot adds up fast in a shop.

When Carbide Wins Decisively

Pick carbide when your material is abrasive rather than merely hard. Reclaimed lumber with embedded grit, knotty pine, and cedar are the cases woodworkers raise most often. High speed steel edges fail quickly on all three, and carbide does not care.

Pick carbide also if you do not own a stone and a honing guide. Sharpening is a skill, and a knife you cannot sharpen is a knife you replace.

Straight Knives vs Spiral Cutterheads

No straight knife set solves tear-out in figured wood. A helical cutterhead with carbide inserts shears the chip upward across a longer arc, and that is the mechanism that prevents tearing out grain in maple and cherry.

If tear-out is your main problem, changing blade material is a partial fix at best. The real fix is a different cutterhead design, which costs more than any knife set.

How to Choose Planer Knives Without Guessing

Measure before you order, and measure three dimensions: cutting length, body width, and body thickness. Cutting length is what most listings lead with, but width and thickness are what actually stop a knife from fitting.

Cutting length should equal the width of your cutterhead. Body thickness usually runs 1/16 inch or 1/8 inch, and it must match what the knife holder accepts. Body width has to clear the holder without binding, and it varies more between brands than the other two numbers.

Next, decide on edge type. A reversible double-edged knife gives twice the life and is the sensible default. A single-bevel knife is the correct choice only if the machine is a jointer, because jointer blades are ground for one specific side.

Then check the mounting. Blades with machined locator holes seat far more consistently than plain drilled holes, and that consistency is the difference between a clean first pass and a full day of chasing ridges.

Finally, count your knives. Most three-knife cutterheads want three blades, and two-knife configurations are not interchangeable with them. A matched spare set is worth having, and experienced woodworkers recommend keeping one on hand.

Planer Blades vs Jointer Blades vs Lunchbox Knives

Planer and jointer knives are not the same. A planer knife is typically double-edged and reversible, a jointer knife is usually single-bevel because a jointer can surface a single face, and a lunchbox knife is a thin disposable style blade for small portable machines.

Buying the wrong one is an expensive mistake in this category. A jointer knife will not give you a reversible planer function, and a thin portable knife cannot safely handle a stationary planer drum.

If you also sharpen by hand, our paring knife picks cover a different class of tool, but the sharpening habits transfer directly.

Blade Alignment: Why New Knives Leave Ridges and Waves

Ridges after a blade change are rarely the fault of the new knives. They are usually a parallelism, torque, or cleanliness problem in the drum, and this section addresses the cause behind most of that frustration.

Clean the drum first. Resin, sap, and pitch build up on the knife seat and the drum face, and a thin film of pitch is enough to hold a knife a few thousandths of an inch off its true height. Scrape the seat and the drum with a plastic or wood scraper, never metal, then wipe clean.

Seat each knife fully before tightening anything. The knife must lie flat on the seat with no daylight behind it. If it rocks, the drum needs more material removed, not a harder bolt.

Tighten in stages, alternating between the two screws on each knife. A torque wrench matters here more than most people expect, because an over-tightened screw pulls the knife out of flat, and an out-of-flat knife marks the sole. Snug, then a second pass, then check.

Finally, confirm all three knives sit at the same height with a straightedge across the drum before you power up. If they do not match, the surface will ripple no matter how sharp the edges are.

Symptom, Cause and Fix at a Glance

Regular ridges running in the direction of feed point to unequal knife height or uneven torque. Correct both and the ridges disappear without touching the edges.

Rippled or washboard surfaces that appear only on certain boards usually indicate a dull edge rather than an alignment fault. Finger-test the edge or look at the chip it produces; a torn chip means sharpen.

Dark burn marks on a figured board point to heat, which comes from a dull edge rubbing rather than shearing. Freshening the edge clears them immediately.

Fuzzing and tear-out on softwood that planed cleanly before point to resin build-up on the drum face. Clean it, then check that the knives are cutting rather than dragging.

Troubleshooting Chipping, Tear-Out, Fuzzing and Rough Surfaces

Chipped edges are almost always an impact problem, not a hardness problem. High speed steel survives impact better than carbide, but neither survives a nail buried in reclaimed lumber. Inspect the lumber before planing rather than after.

Edges that dull within minutes on dense hardwood are a material signal. Move up in hardness to carbide, or accept a more frequent sharpening cycle. Changing brands will not change the outcome.

Ridges and waves after installation are mechanical, and the alignment section above is the fix. If ridges persist after full cleaning, seating and staged torque, suspect a knife that is not flat from the factory and send it back.

A surface that looks good on pine but tears out on walnut is a geometry problem rather than a material one. A sharper edge helps, but figured and quilted grain needs a helical cutterhead to cut cleanly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are planer and jointer blades the same?

No. A planer knife is usually double-edged and reversible because a thickness planer cuts from both sides of the drum. A jointer knife is typically single-bevel, ground for one face, because a jointer only surfaces one side of the workpiece. They also differ in how they are ground, not just in length, so a jointer knife will not give you a reversible planer edge.

Should I buy HSS or carbide planer knives?

Buy HSS for clean lumber, moderate volume, and if you own a waterstone, because HSS takes the finest cut and can be resharpened indefinitely. Buy carbide when you plan abrasive material such as reclaimed lumber, cedar or knotty pine, or when you have no sharpening setup. Carbide holds its edge far longer but cannot be sharpened once dull.

Why does my planer leave wavy or ridged surfaces after a blade change?

Waves and ridges after a blade change are almost always alignment, not sharpness. Clean pitch and resin off the drum seat with a non-metallic scraper, seat each knife fully flat, then tighten the screws in stages with a torque wrench. Finally, check all three knives sit at the same height with a straightedge across the drum before powering up.

How thick should planer blades be?

Most portable and mid-size planers take a 1/16 inch body, while many 15 inch professional drums require a 1/8 inch body for stiffness. Measure your existing blade with calipers and match all three dimensions: cutting length, body width, and body thickness. A blade that is close but not exact can deflect, jam, or mark the sole.

Can you sharpen carbide planer knives?

No. Tungsten carbide and TCT knives cannot be sharpened on a waterstone or a standard grinding wheel, so once the edge is gone the blade is replaced. That is the main economic argument for HSS on a stationary planer, where a good stone can restore an edge in minutes. Carbide still wins on abrasive lumber because it stays sharp between replacements.

The Verdict: Which Planer Knife Set to Buy

If you own a DeWalt DW734, the POWERTEC 12-1/2 inch set is the pick. It combines a strong rating with a large review volume, has machined locator holes that solve the alignment problem before it starts, and carries reversible edges that double the life. Delta 22-540 and TP300 owners get the FOXBC 12 inch set, which is reported sharp straight out of the packaging.

For a 13 inch DeWalt, choose the factory DW7352-2 pack if you plan daily and want the vacuum heat treatment, or the FOXBC 13 inch set for the same footprint at a lower outlay. Ridgid, WEN and Delta owners get the multi-brand POWERTEC 13 inch set, and older R4331 and R4330 machines are covered by the JTEX knives made for that pattern.

Plenty of wide professional drums take a 1/8 inch body only, which is what the Delta, Grizzly and JET 15 inch set provides. Hand planer users pick the carbide ten pack for abrasive lumber or the HSS ten pack for a lower outlay with a sharpenable edge. If you own no planer yet, our planer recommendations will narrow the machine first.

Whichever set you choose, measure all three dimensions before ordering, keep a matched spare set on the shelf, and expect to spend more time cleaning the drum seat than swapping knives. That last habit keeps the finish smooth in 2026 and in every year after it.
